Nuru at New Spitalfields
Nuru Agriculture’s business is based on developing links between small-scale African farmers and domestic, regional and international markets. In Western Europe, one of the biggest fresh produce markets is at New Spitalfields in east London, and with London’s large and diverse ethnic communities, it was clear that Nuru should have an outlet here.
We were lucky, as leases for stands at New Spitalfields come up only rarely: on the basis of our ethical objectives, when the lease to stand 82 became available, the City of London Corporation granted it to Nuru Trading and we started trading in May 2013.
Nuru Trading aims to be the main UK outlet for produce imported from Africa, giving African producers access to a high value market.
We have the capacity to trade well over 100 tonnes of produce daily, and our stand includes a cold storage facility.
